Whether you’re checking in on yourself, supporting someone you love, or exploring treatment options, you’re not alone. Mental Health Month is a great time to start a conversation. More resources below.
Mental health challenges are more common than we think. This year…
1 in 4 adults in the U.S. are living with a mental health condition
Over 1.8 million adults in Georgia are affected
300+ people will find guidance and recovery at Promises Atlanta
Step 1: Start with awareness.
Share how you, yourself, feel and what you are noticing about their behavior. A lot of times, people don’t realize the impact their behavior or emotions are having on us. You can say something like, “Hey, I’ve noticed your reactions are different than usual. Can I share what I’ve been noticing?”
Step 2: Share support.
Have a sense of the kinds of resources available in your area. Whether that’s therapy, outpatient care, or something more structured, like what we do. Below is a list of local Atlanta resources to consider. Come to the table with ideas and an understanding so the other person doesn’t feel shame for not having those answers.
Important Note: Lead with love.
Conversations that are rooted in fear, shame, or frustration are not fertile ground for change. People respond to feeling supported, not judged. Bring them love.
Step 3: Give space for processing.
The last step is to give them space. You might add, ‘Let’s check back in next week.’ This keeps the door open without forcing change before they’re ready. Or, if they are ready, sit with them while they consider which resource might be right for them and how to go forward.
